So my boss wanted me to organize the Christmas party for our office this year. Crap ! This is the biggest pain in the whazoo there ever was. I have about a month to get it done. I have already decided that it will be a potluck dinner party. Probably would have been easier to just get a bunch of platters made somewhere but everyone else will be doing that and accidents happen. Orders get lost or given to the wrong customer and wham ! No food !
So potluck it is and now I have to get people to agree to bring in main dishes and desserts etc… Chips and dip, sodas and stuff like that I can go buy on the company dime from Costco or somewhere like that. I also need to dig out the Christmas decorations and put them up as that is part of the job as well.
I already know what I am bringing. It’s the one thing everyone loves for me to bring in. Oreo truffles aka Oreo cookie balls. They are seriously simple to make and cost very little as well. People LOVE them and they are usually gone before dinner is even served !
I have a food craving. One that comes from my early days of living on my own. You remember those days right? Back when you just leave home to get your own place or go off to college. My addiction is Ramen noodles. We have all had to eat them at some point in our lives. Usually when we are finally realizing that paying the bills and eating don’t always go hand in hand. We go to the store and buy the cheapest stuff we can that will get us by without starving and Ramen noodles are always on that list.
I still eat them quite a bit. Not because I have to, but because I have learned to love them. I like to change them up and add all kinds of ingredients to them. I like to add veggies and meat and a wee bit more flavoring ( of course), and mushrooms. I have to have mushrooms in as much food as I can. ( Even bigger food craving, but that is not important right now. )
Did you know that Ranch salad dressing tastes great in beef flavored Ramen noodles. OMG…it is amazing. A friend of mine told me to try it and it was so delicious. So if you want to have a blast from the past or are currently living off of Ramen. There are a million and one ways to give them a little bit more pizzazz ! Just throw some of your favorite ingredients in there and ….Voila ! Tasty meal.
What a fucked up day today has been. Its like anything that could possibly go wrong found a way to go wrong. You know what I mean?
First thing is when I left the house to go to work, I noticed the right front tire looked funny. Thank God I had parked on the street and had to walk past the front tire to get in the car. If I had parked in the driveway I would not have seen the tire at all. So I drove straight to the gas station where they have an air pump and found out that the air is not free anymore. You have to pay fifty cents to get air in your tires. If course, you need two fucking quarters to put in the machine, and I have no quarters on me. At. All.
So, I go inside the store and ask for change and the fuckhead clerk tells me that I have to buy something before he can open the register drawer and give me any change. What the fuck? I want to buy air. Give me some fucking quarters!
So then there is a wreck on the interstate and traffic is fucked up for like 20 miles. I saw all the brake lights and got off the interstate, but so did a thousand other people, so the surface roads were clogged up and there’s a traffic light every 1/4 mile along that whole road. So it was slow going. Of course, I was like 40 minutes late for work.
The whole day just turned to shit. The boss was bitchy. The secretary called out sick. I just sucked it up and got through the say. When I get home I want some macaroni and cheese and a glass of red wine and a hot bath. And then I’ll think about dinner.
Thanksgiving was really nice but not as many people showed up as we were expecting, so I have a lot of turkey leftover. The side dishes are left over, too, but they are easier to deal with than the big chunks of turkey meat. I can make soup and get rid of most of the vegetables. But there are only so many turkey sandwiches that I can stand before the thought of more turkey just makes me ill.
On today’s sandwich, which I hope will be the last turkey sandwich in a very long time for me, I just put a slice of Swiss cheese and some thin slices of Vidalia onion and a nice spread of mayonnaise on the bread with the sliced turkey. I considered grilling the sandwich so the cheese would melt, but the bread was so fresh and soft that I didn’t want to ruin the bread by grilling it.
Yesterday’s sandwich was totally different. I didn’t use cheese at all, and I put a layer of leftover stuffing on the meat, then I smeared a thin coat of jellied cranberry sauce on the bread instead of mayonnaise. It turned out really tasty, but I have had plenty of turkey to last me a long while.
The closest place to my house get a sub for lunch is Subway. There are actually three of them within 2 miles of my house, and I go to the newest one most of the time. But if I go just another miles or two the options really open up. There is a Jersey Mikes in the shopping center where the Kroger grocery store is located. And just past there is a Firehouse Subs. And practically next door to the Firehouse subs is a new place called Penn Station Subs.
I have tried all of the sub places and the really funny thing is that I would much rather have a Quiznos sub than any of them. But there is not Quiznos anywhere near my house. The closest one I can think of is about 25 miles away, with traffic that means a 40 minute drive. Fuck that kind of a drive for a sub. But if I ever have a reason to be in that part of town during lunch time, I try to go to that Quiznos and get a sub there.
Since I don’t usually go all out and head to that Quiznos, I think I would pick the Penn Station subs as my favorite from the closer ones. Their bread is a soft and chewy beard with a thin crispy crust. They put plenty of meat of the sandwich and the rest of the fixings and condiments are great. That’s my plan for today – Penn Station Subs.
